Hogsback is an enchanting forest town in the Eastern Cape, named after three distant ridges of the Amathole mountains that look like the backs of wild pigs. Besides home to the most challenging hiking trail in South Africa, there is different doesn’t really matterit’s a natural fantasy world, Middle-earth (the setting of The Lord of the Rings and other works), with this little village deep in the heart of the Eastern Cape forests. It has become a popular spot for nature lovers, arts and crafts, photography, and charming honeymoon couples looking for a romantic getaway.

🏞️ Best Time to Visit Hogsback

Hogsback is beautiful all year round. Misty and romantic in winter, lush and green in summer. We were there in October, and although it was freezing cold the first two days, it cleared up – I’ll say go prepared for all seasons.

🌞 Summer (Dec–Feb): Warm, green, and perfect for outdoor adventures.
🍂 Autumn (Mar–May): Crisp air, golden forests – photographer’s dream.

💡 Insider Tip: For waterfalls at their best, visit after the rains (Nov–April) – September and May are quieter, cheaper, and still beautiful.

🌍 How to Get to Hogsback

Hogsback is about 3.00 hours from East London and 1.5 hours from Alice. The road up the mountain can be steep, and slippery. Drive slowly, especially in the mist or rain, enjoy the surroundings and fresh mountain air. We travelled with our 2 4-legged children (dogs), Rosy and Jockie 🐕 enjoyed every moment.

✈️ By Air: Fly into East London Airport, then drive to Hogsback, 141 km – about 3-hour drive away – check flight options.
🚗 By Car: The drive from East London to Hogsback is around 141 km.
