How to Get up Mount Fansipan

There are various ways to experience the beauty and grandeur of Fansipan Mountain in Vietnam. While a Fansipan hike is the most adventurous way to reach the summit, other options exist, like a scenic cable car ride to Mount Fansipan.

Fansipan Mountain Cable Car: First, take the 2-kilometre Muong Hoa Mountain Train to Tram Ton, which takes about 4 minutes to the Fansipan cable car station. The Mt Fansipan Cable Car is the world’s longest nonstop cable car, spanning 6,292 meters from the Muong Hoa Valley to the peak of Fansipan Mountain. Gliding over lush valleys, terraced rice fields, and charming villages, the journey takes up to 20 minutes.

Reaching the summit, one can explore the well-maintained pathways that lead to various viewpoints, temples, and monuments. The area is beautifully landscaped, making it a perfect spot for photography and sightseeing. The cable car operates from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily, and you can purchase a round-trip Fansipan Cable Car ticket.

Hiking to the highest peak in Vietnam: Trekking Mount Fansipan offers an exhilarating experience and should be included in any adventure enthusiast’s Sapa itinerary. Hiking up to Fansipan alone is possible, although I recommend getting a guide, as the route is not marked. Start your Fansipan Mountain trek early; expect to climb over rocks and hike for hours before reaching the summit.

The Best Hikes in Sapa

Sapa offers various hiking experiences ranging from a short 1-day trek to a 4-day trek to Mount Fansipan. Sapa homestay trekking is one of the most popular options, but camping is also available for a more rugged adventure. Remember to take insect repellent for mosquitoes and leeches.

Cat Cat Village

When planning your Sapa Vietnam itinerary, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the charming Cat Cat Village for a unique cultural experience. The Mong ethnic group has inhabited Cat Cat Village since the mid-19th century. In the early 20th century, the French designated this village as a retreat for their officials, drawn by its natural beauty. One notable feature is a picturesque waterfall known as “Cat Scat” in French, which inspired the French to name the village.

The village is a short scenic walk outside town, so wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Walking down the village, we encounter waddling ducks and free-roaming chickens, reflecting the village’s idyllic rural lifestyle. Stalls line the path, offering an assortment of handicrafts, naturally dyed textiles, homemade corn wine, and savoury buffalo jerky. Don’t miss trying thịt bò khô, a delicious dried buffalo beef snack that pairs well with rice or fresh green papaya salad.

One of the highlights in the Village is the beautiful Tien Sa Waterfall, also known as Cat Cat Waterfall, which contributes to the village’s romantic atmosphere. Additionally, the village’s Nhà Hàng Dũng Thu centre offers visitors a unique cultural experience through the local performances showcasing their horses and lifestyle. And yes, there were cats during our visit on one of the best Cat Cat village Half-day guided tour.
